On a statewide level, California started Stage 1 in mid March, closing down dining rooms, but allowing restaurants to remain open for takeout and delivery. On March 20, the state eased alcohol restrictions, allowing beer, wine, and cocktails for takeout and delivery.
California is currently in Stage 2, which started on Friday, May 8, allowing restaurants to start reopening for sit-down dining, as well as bars, wineries, and breweries, provided they serve food. The state moves into Stage 3 of the reopening on Friday, June 12, allowing all bars, breweries, and wineries to start reopening, whether or not they serve food.
All that said, individual counties must attest to hitting specific testing and infection rates before they’re allowed to move into each successive stage, and many Bay Area counties have chosen to set stricter guidelines than what’s permitted by the state. See specifics below.
